    B. Professional or Academic Teaching Positions

(07/01-08/03) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA

Senior Post-doctoral Fellow. Research Laboratory of Electronics –RELATE ( Research in Learning, Assessing, and Tutoring Effectively)

RELATE Group is directed by Prof. David Pritchard, who, having mentored four Nobel prizewinners is known as one of the world’s leading mentors. I collaborated with him on CyberTutor, a sophisticated interactive Web-based tutor designed to improve learning experience for teachers and students. I was responsible for research in education and instructional technology based on statistical analysis as well as ways to improve and measure the impact of the CyberTutor in education effectiveness.

    • Co-Responsible for some facets of research including proposal writing, funding, research design, management, execution, statistical analysis and synthesis, and report writing.
    • Conducted statistical analysis using SPSS, UNIX, ACCESS, and SQL
    • Made presentations at local and national academic conferences

    Major Research at MIT:

    ·    Effectiveness of Course Elements: The Value of Uses of Technology in Education. This research is especially stimulating. I feel confident that uses of technology in teaching can improve students’ understanding of the subject. We found that students who elected to do more electronic homework significantly improve their scores on the assessment instruments relative to their performance on these instruments before using CyberTutor. This research is particularly important because it suggests that efforts to improve instruction should concentrate on improving instructional formats.

    ·     Electronic homework that combines assessment and tutoring as a performance assessment instrument is both reliable and valid. This study presents several assessment algorithms with a maximum reliability of 99.9 %. It shows that an electronic homework tutor has about an order of magnitude less variance per unit time than paper-testing assessments (i.e. a 3-hour final exam and 12 weekly tests together). In addition, its high validity allows us to use CyberTutor for predicting subsequent exam results.

    ·     Relationship between conceptual learning and quantitative learning. Physics education research shows that conceptual understanding is not necessary for students to do well on standard quantitative problems in introductory physics. This study addresses a related question: is conceptual understanding sufficient or helpful for students to do well on quantitative problems? Our results show little inductive influence upon the quantitative one from doing the conceptual one first, but suggest that working on quantitative problem first helps students with the subsequent conceptual one.

     ·         A correlation analysis of the Students' Response Variables from Online Tutoring System.

We examine the correlation of 12 background variables determined from a student survey with assessment instruments including paper-testing instruments (e.g. final exam and weekly tests) and an electronic assessment from the results of a Web-based homework tutorial. On this basis we suggest that the use of un-timed Web-based tutorials can make an important contribution to assess student performance, without bias due to students’ background difference

    V. SERVICE AND CONTRIBUTIONS

     A. Service to the College

      ·         Curriculum coordinator of Advanced Certificated in Educational Specialist. I prepared a template meeting NCATE requirements used by adjunct professors to develop their syllabi (Collaborators: Dr. Manley, Dr. Kelly)

      ·         Filled out the forms and information for the registration of the Advanced Certificated in Educational Specialist (Worked with Dr. Manley)

      ·         Maximize Website Committee (Sept 2005-present). (Drs. Inman, Tatum, Morote, and Tacke). Demonstrated strong commitment to improve web page for the Ed.D. department. In November 2004, prepared a webpage and developed workshop for Ed.D faculty. I am very interested in sharing my knowledge of instructional technology with other teachers. I would like to prepare a course for Dowling College professors, and idea greatly supported by my coworkers.

      ·         Technology Grant Committee Coordinator (Sept 2005-present ) (Collaborators: Drs. Tatum, Kelly, and Manley)

      ·         Electronic portfolios. Blackboard pilot testing (Sept 2004- present). Digital portfolio software – demonstration

      ·         Educational Administration Marketing Plan (May 12, 2004-present). (Dr. Tacke, Facilitator, Drs. Brucia, Inserra, Morote)

      ·         Marketing for Doctoral Program (March 2005- present). (Drs. Rudiger and Morote - model discussion)

      ·         NCATE came and saw our work for the School of Education. When I had chance to talk with them I showed them my students’ digital portfolios and also my research on the impact of a beginning technology courses in their classrooms. In addition, I described the great technology course resources available at Dowling (e.g. the video conference room, computers, internet access, and strong team support).

    B. Service to the Profession or Discipline

The Regional Council for Research and Practice (RCRP)

Collaborative project between Dowling College faculty in education and the Regional Information Center at Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

Dowling College, BOCES, and school district superintendents have formed a work group dedicated to the development of models that bridge expertise across the fields of research and practice in education on the Island.  Each of these projects will target a specific school data-based need in the region.  There will be a positive impact this collaboration promises to have a positive impact on K-12 and teacher/leadership education and we anticipate that the caliber of our efforts will lead to external funding for more long-term endeavors.

    Liberty Partnership/Long Island Urban League.

On June 2, 2005, two Dowling College faculty members and myself from Dowling College and I visited Central Islip High School and Middle School to conduct a qualitative observation of the Liberty Partnership/Long Island Urban League after school academic intervention services, career development and counseling services. The college faculty members in attendance were: Dr. Robert J. Manley, Chairperson of Educational Administration. Dr. Elsa Sofia Morote, Dr. Stephanie Tatum, and Dr. Victor Cordova, who served as an Intern Observer and participated in discussions and interviews.

At the high school, eleven students participated in the focus group. From the program staff, one teacher and the program coordinator, who taught math skills, were interviewed.

At the middle school, fourteen students participated in the focus group. Three faculty members were interviewed (two instructors conducting group lesson; and one working individually with students on a computer for SAT preparation and career counseling were interviewed.) The principal of the Middle School joined the after-school session and participated in the individual interviews. After the consulting a series of workshops was suggested. I conducted one workshop and additional ones are planned.

VI. Continuing Education and Professional Development

    1. “Advanced Statistical Analysis Using SPSS” (February 10-14, 2005)

Course received in the SPSS’s headquarters. The course included Discriminant analysis, Binary logistic regression , Multinomial logistic regression, Survival Analysis (Kaplan-Meier) , MANOVA: multivariate analysis of variance, Loglinear analysis , Cluster analysis, Factor analysis, and  Repeated Measures ANOVA.

    2. "Sample Size and Power Determination" (Sep. 23- Oct. 14, 2005).

This course shows how to make power and sample size determination for experiments, surveys and long-term trials using Stata and other widely-available computer software.

    3. "Structural Equation Modeling" (Oct. 14 - Nov. 11, 2005)

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a general statistical modeling technique to establish relationships among variables. A key feature of SEM is that observed variables are understood to represent a small number of “latent constructs” that cannot be directly measured, only inferred from the observed measured variables.
